Obi-Wan Kenobi #3 (Written by Jason Munoz)
From one of the most intense episodes of Star Wars in 2023 comes the comic book adaptation of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Part III. From his Mustafar fortress, Vader orders Reva to locate Kenobi, promising her the role of Grand Inquisitor if successful. Kenobi (still reeling from learning that Anakin is alive) and Leia land on the mining planet Mapuzo, following Haja’s rendezvous instructions. When no one appears, they board an Imperial transport but are discovered, prompting Imperial troops to pursue them. Fortunately, an undercover Imperial officer named Tala, part of the Path—an underground network sheltering Empire-targeted dissidents—comes to their aid. She guides them through a secret subterranean passage. However, Vader and the Inquisitors arrive, using innocent bystanders as bait to draw out Kenobi. Kenobi, sacrificing himself as a diversion, faces Vader and is ultimately overwhelmed and burned. Tala’s distraction allows Kenobi to escape, but Reva succeeds in capturing Leia. As it was in the Disney+ series, the showdown between Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi in this issue is intense and filled with passion on both sides. Penciler Salvador Larroca goes for a photo realistic look which works fine enough, but it’s GURU-eFX’s colors that shine. From Vader’s reflective helmet, to the former Master and apprentice’s lightsaber-lit desert duel, the action and emotion jumps off of every page.
