Star Wars (2020) #5 - Comic Review

The new Star Wars flagship series is finally back on comic book shelves after nearly five months with the fifth issue—resuming the first arc, The Destiny Path. After an eventful beginning on Bespin—set immediately after The Empire Strikes Back—Luke Skywalker embarks on a solo mission to find his destiny path to become a Jedi, despite the shocking reveal of his father’s identity.

Luke Skywalker is determined to become a Jedi, but little does he know about the history of the Order and its ultimate fall. So far, Ben Kenobi and Yoda have only taught him what it is to be a Jedi—to feel the Force flow through him, to channel it and to lift rocks. The two masters have only briefly mentioned the so-called “dark times” and that his father, Anakin Skywalker was killed by the evil Dark Lord of the Sith: Darth Vader. A lie. The reasoning behind not revealing that Darth Vader is indeed his father and the destroyer of the Jedi Order was to protect the young boy from his cursed family lineage—to help him become the hero they need him to be. Now Luke—after losing his lightsaber and having doubts about his destiny—takes on a new quest for discovering the identity of the mysterious woman who appeared in several visions through the Force, to hopefully get some answers about the Jedi.

Charles Soule tells a beautiful new tale, full of mystery that is slowly unveiled panel after panel. His Luke Skywalker feels genuine—perfectly capturing the character’s naïveté and drive for discovery. Discovery of the Jedi’s tragic past, which was only revealed in the prequels. Soule finally bridges that gap between the two trilogies through the words of the mysterious woman—who gives Luke a brief Jedi history lesson towards the end of the issue. This is probably one of the most important moments in Star Wars writing, shaping Luke Skywalker in such a way that (I predict) by the end of this series will change how we see the character in the movies—not only within the Original trilogy but also understanding his choices in The Last Jedi.
