Welcome to The Clone Wars Double Take—where Fabio and Ross (and maybe even special guests) will give some quick thoughts regarding the latest episodes of The Clone Wars (Season 7) on Disney+. On this article we will cover The Clone Wars: Together Again.
Spoiler Warning
Fabio’s Double Take
Our heroes are once again in a prison break situation as the second arc of The Clone Wars Season 7 wraps up with Together Again. I feel like this episode is the final test for Ahsoka Tano as she—probably for the first time since she left the Order—reveals her identity as a Jedi to both her friends and enemies. A decision that is ultimately leading her to Mandalore to face none other than Maul. Here are my favorite moments of the episode:
- Jedi or not, here I come: Ahsoka’s third attempt at escape from the Pykes is a successful one—but came at a cost. In order to finally use her Jedi skills, she manages to convince Marg Krim to send the Martez sisters to retrieve the spice. Obviously, we know by now that the precious cargo was lost in space—and this is just an excuse for Ahsoka to free the sisters from the Pykes—and get herself in Jedi mode to discover what the crime syndicate has been in league with.
- Maul is back: As Ahsoka is sneaking around the prison complex—planting explosives—she accidentally witnesses a holo-discussion between Marg Krim and a mysterious hooded figure. I absolutely lost my mind as I began to hear the first words of voice actor Sam Witwer, reprising his legendary role as Maul. This clearly is a sign of the beginning of the end for The Clone Wars—and it should be an epic one!
- Road to Mandalore: Ahsoka discovers Maul’s whereabouts, and, at the end of the episode, decides to join the trio of Mandos (one of them Mando legend Bo-Katan) in a quest to Mandalore to face Maul, their common enemy. This is a bittersweet moment because Ahsoka has to part ways with her newfound friends—and who knows if this will be the last from the Martez sisters!
The second arc of The Clone Wars is over, but the epic conclusion is about to begin! Get ready to be MAULED!
Ross’ Double Take
Ahsoka Tano reflects the ethical compass of a pure Jedi and is represented by the moral of this episode: “You can change who you are, but you cannot run from yourself.” Her emotional struggles are often based on her deep belief in what is right and good—no matter what protocol dictates. Her eyes—initially opened by her own experience with a bureaucratic Order—experience how the everyday inhabitants of the galaxy are forced to live and how the Jedi are perceived by those, seemingly, most in need. Some takeaways from Together Again:
- The Reveal—Part One: Maul has arrived and is a major player. This episode will inspire me to watch Solo: A Star Wars Story this weekend. The former Sith speaking to—and emotionally terrorizing—Marg Krim of the Pykes strikes the same fear present in the film’s Dryden Vos of Crimson Dawn. Krim laments, “He knows. He always knows,” to his questioning lieutenant when speaking of Maul and the pulse kept on all operations. And then …
- The Reveal—Part Two: … Maul senses Ahsoka—through the holo—prior to the Togruta exposing herself as a Jedi to the Pykes. and then feeling the guilt of Trace and Rafa finding out. Ahsoka wants to just fly under the radar but (sorry for jumping to a Marvel reference, but at least it’s another Disney property) with great power comes great responsibility. She knows this, and her strong moral compass won’t let her act otherwise—as we already know from E.K. Johnston’s book. The four episodes we’ve been waiting upon for many years are on the horizon.
- Rafa’s Realization/Ahsoka’s Ascension: The scheming older sister of the Martez duo hasn’t trusted Ahsoka since minute one, but that changes in this episode. It is Rafa who explains to her younger sister, Trace, that their new friend is unique. “What she did back there—giving herself up for us—that’s rare,” Rafa said after realizing Ahsoka sacrificed herself for their safety. The true payoff to this moment comes at the end of the episode as Ahsoka faces her biggest moment of doubt with the sisters. Rafa shares a thought Ahsoka really needed to hear: “You might not think of yourself as a Jedi, but you act like one—or at least how I want them to be.”
- Toong Species: I loved seeing what I believe are Toong workers at both Pyke locations. This is the same species as podracer Ben Quadinaros, from The Phantom Menace, whose racer malfunctioned before he ever took off. They were fun comic relief during a fight scene allowing Rafa to show her chops against a Trandoshan.
- The Armorer: Is there any chance that Ursa Wren becomes the Armorer in The Mandalorian series? This is the second episode in a row where her cadence and tone reminded me of one of the best new characters in the Star Wars galaxy.
And then there were four.
