Spoiler Warning
Valance has lost his leg in a fight during his cadet years after seemingly being left for dead by the Empire. Fortunately, Han Solo and the other cadets rescued him, but unfortunately the Empire is not willing to pay for a cybernetic leg nor to let him pilot a Tie Fighter again leaving Valance furious, depressed, and in a position of needing to seriously think over his life. His friend Han Solo tries to console him, but there’s only so much a fellow Imperial can do to make Valance feel any better. Fast forward to the present and Valance is hanging onto the Rebel transport for dear life out in space after he jettisons his X-wing into hyperspace to make the Ohnaka Gang think he has retreated. It’s not long before he sneaks his way back on the ship to cause all sorts of hell for the criminals. Once again he partners up with Private Sproull, who had previously freed him from the brigg to ask for his help against the pirates, and they band together with her Rebel crew to slowly take out as many of the gang as possible. At the same time, back on Ruusan, a barely walking T’onga and her partner Losha make the tough decision to go after the ones who murdered Nakano Lash. Despite things looking grim, it’s a task that T’onga feels must be done. Back on the Rebel ship things are starting to culminate to a final battle as the Ohnaka Gang’s forces are whittled down to few and both Dengar and the Rebel traitor Commander Hill Purpura discuss possibly taking their own action against the gang’s leader Captain Skragg. As things come to an action packed peak, Valance comes to learn something about his old buddy from his cadet days that immediately puts his thoughts on his next task once the Rebels are safe!
Bounty Hunters #10 is definitely the most exciting issue yet! Writer Ethan Sacks pulls out all the stops to make this issue the perfect example of a great scoundrel story. It has a good and sad backstory, tons of action, people turning on each other, a great and intense hook for the next tale, hell it even has a sequence where the lights go out and our titular anti-hero stalks pirates in the darkness! The characters here are great, especially Valance who is at his most fun and badass so far in this series.
It’s not just Sacks that goes all out here, but also the entire visual artistic team as well! Between artist Paolo Villanelli and colorist Arif Prianto this issue is an absolute spectacle to behold. Bounty Hunters #10 is chock-full of action, near explosive fights, and wonderful set pieces. The entire issue plays out almost like the final act of a John Wick style movie with visceral and entertaining violence to be had for nearly all the villains of the story that it’s hard to even highlight specifics when everything is so awesome. I will say that the lights out sequence does stand as a pretty wonderful segment throughout this whole event, full of darker tones, but the colors never look muted or muddied as Prianto’s beautiful work still pops even in the dark!
VC’s Travis Lanham gives us perfect lettering throughout the issue as well, especially during dialogue involving stern talks or dying yelps. Everything is on par with what we’ve come to expect with Lanham’s great work. Mattia de Iulis’ cover is absolutely breathtaking with the intricate details of both Valance and Dengar’s brutal expressions as well as the uncanny villainy of Weequay pirate Captain Skragg.
This issue is a great culmination of this three part Rebel rescue full of action, betrayal, and intrigue with a hook that leaves readers on the edge of their seat! So get up off your own seat and run out to get Bounty Hunters #10 from your local comic shop today!
