Doctor Aphra (2020) #24 - Comic Review

The rogue archeologist fights against the memories of the Spark Eternal in Doctor Aphra (2020) #24!

Doctor Aphra (2020) #24 starts off with a BANG with the titular character reliving one of her memories. Battling against various blaster wielding foes, Aphra looks to be running out of luck, until she comes across a small Chadra-Fan in ancient Ascendant attire! Realizing the Chadra-Fan is here to help, and part of the Spark Eternal’s memory, Aphra goes along with the help and tries to figure out any way to combat the Spark’s attack on her mind. At the same time we find Sana Starros and her new crew of various ex friends and lovers attempting to track down the body of Aphra. Unfortunately for them, the place they are going to also contains ex friends of Aphra: two deadly droids! Thankfully, they aren’t the only ones trying to find Aphra as we find Just Lucky and Ariole Yu on the chase as well with a different lead that might yield better results.

Alyssa Wong continues, as expected, to craft an incredible story with Doctor Aphra (2020) #24. They push the narrative they have going with bringing everyone from Aphra’s past into one story, and it’s just an absolute blast to watch all these characters work together to save someone they love, whether they want to admit it or not. The action is fun and their love for exploring this ancient aspect of Star Wars history with the Ascendant continues to be one of my favorite things in the franchise right now.

Artist Minkyu Jung, color artist Rachelle Rosenberg, and letterer VC’s Joe Caramagna make up the crew working on the interior art of Doctor Aphra (2020) #24. As always this crew does a phenomenal job with incredible action and tense, as well as tender, moments wonderfully realized by Jung’s as well as Caramagna’s fantastic lettering all throughout the issue being some of his best work. For me, however, it’s Rosenberg’s colors that seal the deal. The way she details the different settings and events in this issue really set up each scene with a very different vibe to match just how different each scene really is. The memories are darker than the present day, for the most part, and anything involving the lore and excitement of the Spark Eternal is littered in a deep red aura throughout every panel.

The main cover art for Doctor Aphra (2020) #24 is by W. Scott Forbes and finds Aphra and her new found Chadra-Fan friend fending off a gang of Sith attackers. Caspar Wijngaard does the first variant cover which is a gorgeous and incredibly colorful depiction of Aphra herself with various artifacts and goodies she’s found. The second, and once again my favorite, variant cover is the next piece in the Choose Your Destiny line from Chris Sprouse, Karl Story, and Rachelle Rosenberg depicting the epic Sith Lord Momin! His design is stunning on this cover, but it’s his cool lightsaber hilts that take the cake for me!

The lovable rogue is fighting her biggest battle yet as she takes on the Spark Eternal in Doctor Aphra (2020) #24. It’s another epic piece to the coming finale of Alyssa Wong’s masterpiece that demands to be read! So hop on your tauntauns and run down to your local comic shop to pick up your copy today!
