Doctor Aphra (2020) #27 - Comic Review

Witness the aftermath of the battle against the Spark possessed Aphra on The Vermillion in Doctor Aphra (2020) #27!

Following the intense battle with the Spark Eternal possessed Aphra, Chelli’s associates escaped on Sana Starros’ ship which was almost immediately destroyed. Now, in Doctor Aphra (2020) #27, we find Sana and company safe, alive, and revitalized, thanks to Just Lucky and Ariole Yu, who found them shortly after the attack on their ship. After waking up, Sana is glad to be alive, but quickly finds out that Lucky and Ariole aren’t the only ones to thank for their survival. Fortunately, Lucky knew of someone who had the best Bacta tanks in the galaxy to help revitalize the crew, but unfortunately that person is Ronen Tagge. At the same time we find the Spark Eternal, still running Aphra’s body, having a grand old time hanging out with Bee Tee and Triple-Zero, until she gets a rude awakening from Chelli Aphra herself, now seemingly able to fight back against the technological invader!

Writer Alyssa Wong slows the pacing down a lot with Doctor Aphra (2020) #27 which works perfectly with the story they’re working on here. This arc has been fun and exciting, but sometimes you need a breather, especially right after a big epic series of events like the previous few issues. Though the story may have slowed down, the wild events haven’t stopped, and Wong keeps us on the tips of our toes the entire time, with twists and turns throughout the book.

The artistic team behind Doctor Aphra (2020) #27 consists of artist Minkyu Jung, color artist Rachelle Rosenberg, and letterer VC’s Joe Caramagna. Together, the three of them weave another incredible work of art that this series has become known for. The main cover artist is W. Scott Forbes who brings a really neat piece that sees Aphra split in two with one side being Chelli surrounded by friends and the other side being the Spark possessed Aphra surrounded by killer droids. Caspar Wijngaard gives us the Attack of the Clones 20th Anniversary variant cover which features a vibrant and colorful look at Zam Wessell from one of my personal favorite sequences of the film!

Doctor Aphra (2020) #27 slows down a bit as the story focuses on all the major players recovering from their recent battle. But don’t let that fool you, this issue is still full of fun twists and tense moments! So fire up those X-wing Fighters and fly down to your local comic shop to pick up a copy today!
