Halcyon Legacy #5 - Comic Review

The pirate Crimson Jack is about to get his hands on a Resistance spy in Halcyon Legacy #5!

Crimson Jack has boarded the famous starcruiser in Halcyon Legacy #5 only to find that the Resistance spy, Shorr Komrrin, he is so desperate to find has left in an escape pod! Eager to get his prize, he leaves the Legacy immediately to intercept Komrrin, but not before leaving behind some of his pirates to keep the crew and guests of the starcruiser hostage. As Crimson Jack inches ever closer to his goal, D3-09 tells one last story to Komrrin’s granddaughter, Cimina, about a long time guest named R’Tess. 25 years ago, R’Tess and her partner Stolak came aboard the Halcyon to witness the Sungrazer Comet, though some less savory guests have come onto the ship as well, looking for Stolak specifically. As D3-09 tells this tale of hope and love, we find today’s characters filled with hope for their current pirate predicament as well!

Writer Ethan Sacks ends this limited miniseries with the best issue yet. Halcyon Legacy #5 is a tale of hope against all odds, as the best Star Wars tales are. Both the characters in the present day pirate situation and the tale being told by D3-09 do their best to make the outcome of their current experience as good as possible. A lot of these stories from the history of the Legacy have been very fun, yet less impactful on me than I had hoped, but this issue changes that entirely. The story of R’Tess and Stolak was beautiful, poignant, and exciting—giving this series a hopeful and happy sendoff.

The visual artistic team behind Halcyon Legacy #5 consists of artist Will Sliney, colorist Rachelle Rosenberg, and letterer VC’s Joe Sabino. The three of them do a stellar job finishing out this five issue miniseries with fantastic work on the action and also the more tender and personal moments throughout. The scene with the Stargrazer Comet is a stunning work of art that made me feel such an array of emotions. Rosenberg’s colors especially helped to make that moment as wonderful as possible. Sliney’s skill with character work made the interactions between the two lovers extra beautiful as well as the action sequences involving various awesome bounty hunters just that much more epic and fun!

E.M. Gist gives us the main cover art for Halcyon Legacy #5 with a stellar portrait of Bossk in front of the Halcyon itself with a fantastic yellow background that bleeds right into the bounty hunter’s signature outfit. The first variant cover comes from Will Sliney and Lee Loughridge, and sees the entire cast of bounty hunters from this issue, both classic and new characters, poised and ready for action. The second variant cover is by Valerio Giangiordano and Carlos Lopez and once again features Bossk, this time a gorgeous profile of the awesome Trandoshan as he takes on a hail of blaster fire.

The finale of the wonderful miniseries is here with Halcyon Legacy #5! It’s a tale of hope in the face of danger, and delivers everything this series set out to do. With action, romance, drama, tension, and inspiration, this series comes to a close with its best issue yet. So fire up the engines of your own starcruisers and rush on down to your local comic shop to pick up a copy today!
