Solo and crew’s job for Jabba hit an unexpected bump when we last saw them in Han Solo & Chewbacca #2: The urn containing the ashes of Jabba’s enemy was nowhere to be found! Unlike previous issues thus far, The Crystal Run Part 3 stays with Han, Chewie, Greedo and Ovan (Solo’s maybe dad) the entire time, focusing on the fallout of their heist and what needs to be done to ensure they deliver Jabba’s prize.
Writer Marc Guggenheim succeeds in displaying Solo’s knack for quickly changing course to get out of a sticky situation. The fun of this issue is not knowing what’s going to happen next. That combined with the group dynamic being established (plus Solo’s biting humor) makes for an action packed, edge-of-your-seat comic issue. Guggenheim apparently doesn’t want readers to get too comfortable as not the entire crew will make it off-world, one less person to share the bounty with!
Han and Ovan’s father son bond is further strengthened after working together, it seems all it takes is a little trauma to forge this relationship. Solo’s trust goes so far as to invite Ovan onto the next stage of the mission, showing off his prized possession the Millennium Falcon in the process. Ovan seems to be the real deal, though it’s still anyone’s guess if he’s truly who he claims to be. The urn has made its way to the hands of a lilac-haired Sava, Madelin Sun, who is anything but willing to part with the urn on the cheap. Little is revealed of Sun’s true nature (though readers of War of the Bounty Hunters and Crimson Reign are probably very familiar with her), though we do get a glimpse of another female from Han’s life who Sun is becoming very friendly with. Han Solo & Chewbacca #3 ends with Han in the clutches of yet another threat to his mission—a certain dark-furred Wookiee who’s fury will be front and center next issue.
The creative team is once again firing on all cylinders. Artist David Messina keeps this more dialogue heavy issue still fun and engaging, and colorist Alex Sinclair gets to flex with a new setting—the planet Antillion—populated with colorful characters and environments. Letterer Joe Caramagna keeps everything in balance, and gets an extra special shoutout for the sheer number of Shyriiwook RRARRR’s and WARRRROR’s featured. The main cover for Han Solo & Chewbacca #3 is done by Phil Noto, and hints that the Sava we met in this issue might be one of the central villains of the series.
