September 21, 2022 @ 9:25amThe all ages Star Wars anthology series from Dark Horse Comics, Hyperspace Stories, is back and issue #2 features Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia Organa. Set during a time in between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, the two Rebels are on a seemingly simple mission to scout the Outer Rim planet Banas for Imperial activity. It wouldn’t be a hyperspace adventure if all things went completely to plan though, as they soon discover that the Empire isn’t only present—they’re fully entrenched in the sector. Luke and Leia’s relatively simple fact finding mission turns into an Imperial escape as they must rely on the help of a few key locals to get off world as safely as possible. Will they be able to escape the planet unscathed with time to alert the Rebellion of the Empire’s presence?
Hyperspace Stories #2 features cover art and interior illustration by Megan Huang who lends her unique style to her Luke and Leia characterizations while flexing her landscape skills in the stark blue skies and snowy terrain of the planet Banas. Her panels dedicated to the Rebel versus Empire chase scene are particular standouts of this issue due to their strong visual storytelling (no spoilers but there are also deadly beasts thrown into the mix). Comicraft’s Tyler Smith and Jimmy Betancourt handle the lettering this time around, some of which is on display on the cover itself, a cool throwback to the golden age of comics.
While the majority of this issue is fairly light on action, writer Cecil Castellucci takes care in showing how Luke and Leia’s relationship is still in its infancy, how they are learning to trust each other even in dire circumstances. Castellucci nicely balances the fact that Luke and Leia have only gotten to know each other, but they share an undeniably unique bond which is an asset to their mission. Plus, getting a peek into little Leia’s past via a Wookiee plush is a nice touch (and could possibly be part of the mysterious 13th storyline running through each of Hyperspace Stories’ issues). Cary Nord provides the art for this issue’s variant cover, with the Rebel heroes fighting for their lives on the snowy planet.
