July 27, 2022 @ 9:00amObi-Wan #3, titled Darkest Before the Dawn, has Kenobi recounting some of the darkest days from his past. The sandstorm on Tatooine is making its way across the planet, threatening life everywhere which forces Kenobi to rest in the trust he has over Luke Skywalker’s safety by the Lars family. This brings him little comfort, and he intuits an approaching galactic war which Luke will not be able to avoid. Once again readers are plunged into Kenobi’s past, this time dropped amidst his time in the Clone Wars, specifically in a time when he was at his most hopeless.
On deck for issue 3 is artist Alessandro Miracolo, whose work captures the horrors of war in the most stunning way possible with panels filled with air strikes and gun fights. Miracolo effectively balances the action with beautifully expressive character work—readers will truly feel the emotional weight of the story as Kenobi and his compatriots experience both loss and victory. The action is made all the more effective by colorist Frank Williams’ use of vibrant colors across a number of locations, this combined with Joe Caramagna’s lettering drives home the message of light always proceeding darkness. Additionally, Phil Noto’s nostalgic cover features Kenobi and Commander Cody ready for battle.
Writer Christopher Cantwell has his laser cannons aimed directly at hearts with Obi-Wan #3. This particularly bleak Clone Wars era story is one that’s filled with resolve, courage and loss but Cantwell seems to be showing that even in the darkest of times, hope can thrive. While not an all together original Star Wars sentiment, Obi-Wan #3 presents this theme of dark and light in a way that’s both poignant and beautiful, and will leave readers in a reflective state of mind.
