September 7, 2022 @ 9:00amWhile working on the secret project known only as Second Sun, the two Imperials found themselves falling in with Qi’ra and Crimson Dawn and sneaking various information out. Star Wars (2020) #27 finds these two Imperials, Lieutenant Melton and cargo worker Bevelyn on the run from the Empire as they take control of an Imperial shuttle and escape from the construction of the second Death Star. Worried they might be found out, and after realizing just what Second Sun is all about, they took the best and fastest opportunity to get out that they could. With their two kids on board as well, the two find themselves fighting tooth and nail to get away safe. First they try to get in touch with the Rebel Alliance, hoping they will be able to help in trade for Imperial secrets. That’s not fast enough, however, so they have to resort to other means to try and keep themselves and their children safe!
Writer Charles Soule continues his story following the family of Imperial defectors in Star Wars (2020) #27, and it is one of the most captivating issues yet! Melton and Bevelyn are fun and interesting characters as we follow not just the usual Rebels or Imperials, but Imperials turn Crimson Dawn. Some of the best Star Wars stories are the ones that focus on the small characters and how they deal with the massive war going on around them, and Soule does that story perfectly here. We also get to see a few planets and groups of people and how they all react in their own ways to helping, or not helping, these runaways—it’s fantastic to see all sides of what’s going on in this time period.
The artistic crew for Star Wars (2020) #27 consists of artist Andrés Genolet, colorist Rachelle Rosenberg, and letterer VC’s Clayton Cowles. Genolet does a spectacular job with the facial expressions and body language of every single character within this issue. Whether it’s background characters sitting at a desk or intense and screaming Imperials, everyone has their emotions right out in the open in a beautiful and articulate way. And if the art wasn’t already incredible because of Genolet, it’s Rosenberg’s colors that elevate these pages to even bigger heights! Last, but absolutely not least, Cowles once again rocks it with his well crafted speech bubbles and excellent sound effects.
The main cover for Star Wars (2020) #27 comes from my new favorite cover artist E.M. Gist who once again absolutely nails it with a piece depicting an Imperial shuttle being bombarded by TIE fighters and a stellar drawing of Luke Skywalker looking on in the background. The first variant cover is John Tyler Christopher’s awesome Action Figure variant of Nute Gunray from the Prequel films. The second variant comes from Chris Sprouse, Karl Story, and Neeraj Menon who have given us another wonderful Choose Your Destiny cover, this time of Leia Organa during her Jedi training as seen in The Rise of Skywalker.
Soule has crafted one of the most engaging stories of this run with Star Wars (2020) #27. Follow Melton and Bevelyn as they try to save themselves and their children and escape the clutches of the menacing Empire! So fire up your X-wings and zoom down to your local comic shop to help save the family and pick up the comic issue along the way!
