October 12, 2022 @ 9:00amPreviously the group of Imperial defectors, Bevelyn and Melton and their two kids, crashed on the Emperor’s home base of Coruscant. They have very important information dire to the survival of the galaxy: Emperor Palpatine is making a second Death Star. After Luke Skywalker hears about the family trying to get rescued by the Rebels, he notices the Force telling him that they are important people and he needs to help. He convinces the Alliance that they need to go to Coruscant to rescue them! And speaking of Coruscant, Melton and Bevelyn are doing their best to stay alive on a planet that wants them dead. Do the four of them have enough time to stay alive until the rescue party arrives, especially with the Imperials quickly closing in on their location?
Star Wars (2020) #28 finds writer Charles Soule finishing the story arc that follows this family of Imperials turned Crimson Dawn in a fun and exciting way. He shows them taking care of each other and persevering in the face of absolute danger and despair. Oftentimes it’s the Rebel Alliance and the Jedi who are full of hope and inspiration, but Soule shows us that the galaxy is much less black and white—the citizens are not just Rebels and Imperials, but full of other people who are just as awe inspiring as any one of the main heroes. On top of all this, the way Soule writes Luke Skywalker in this issue is absolutely beautiful. Luke here doesn’t necessarily know what to do when he feels his Force related hunches, but he knows that it’s important to do whatever he can no matter the cost, and that’s what really makes this character such a wonderful and compelling hero.
The visual artistic team for Star Wars (2020) #28 is made up of artist Andrés Genolet, colorist Rachelle Rosenberg, and letterer VC’s Clayton Cowles. The three of them do a stunning job detailing this issue, but it’s Rosenberg’s colors that seal the deal. The way she is able to convey the different vibes and feelings of each individual setting seen throughout the pages by giving them they’re own wholly unique vibe and color palette is absolute perfection.
My current favorite cover artist E.M. Gist is back with the main cover for Star Wars (2020) #28 which finds Luke Skywalker dressed in black Imperial officer garb brandishing his yellow lightsaber and looking cool as heck. This cover is definitely my new favorite piece from Gist, and is one I desperately need to own and frame up on my wall! The first variant cover sees John Tyler Christopher return for another Action Figure variant, this time with Rune Haako, one of the Neimoidians who helped run the Trade Federation in the Prequel films. The second variant cover is from Greg Land and Frank D’Armata celebrating the 45th anniversary of A New Hope with a gorgeous portrayal of Luke, Obi-Wan, C-3PO, R2-D2, and a few Tusken Raiders on Tatooine.
Star Wars (2020) #28 finishes the pulse pounding story arc following a family of Imperials turned Crimson Dawn members looking for help from the Rebel Alliance with information that people are willing to kill for. It’s a stunning and hopeful conclusion that is one of the best issues of the current run so far. So fire up your X-wings and fly on down to your local comic shop to pick up your copy today!
