November 2, 2022 @ 9:00amStill reeling from the revelation that the Empire is building a second Death Star, Star Wars (2020) #29 finds Amilyn Holdo convincing the various main characters of this series to take a vacation. While Chewbacca and Lando take their mind off the Galactic Civil War with some gambling, we find Luke doing some Jedi studies and learning more about the Force than ever before. Leia, however, is finding it hard to relax as she was initially told this wasn’t a vacation, but instead a mission to help the Rebels. After some discussion, Holdo reveals that, while they are in a vacation home, there is something they can do on this beautiful planet that can help the Rebel Alliance get an upper hand in the war!
Writer Charles Soule starts a new arc with Star Wars (2020) #29 as we find the Rebels desperate for some new found sense of hope and happiness. This issue is much lighter than Soule’s recent stories, but that’s not to say it isn’t as important and serious. He shows his writing prowess with a story that is equally important as the rest of the run, but doesn’t necessarily focus on the intense and hopeless times that often come with this time period. Also, the way Soule shows how everyone in this group relaxes, or doesn’t in the case of Leia, is a really nice look at a side of these characters we don’t often see. This is definitely one of his best issues in this run.
The artistic team behind Star Wars (2020) #29 consists of artist Ramon Rosanas, colorist Rachelle Rosenberg, and letterer VC’s Clayton Cowles. With Soule bringing the story to an exciting and fancy location, the artists needed to reflect that on the page and they did a wonderful job doing it. Rosanas creates a beautiful and expensive looking locale, but it’s really Rosenberg’s colors that bring this planet to life. The way she details the pool setting right off the bat shows that we’re in a place rarely seen in the Star Wars universe. She really brings a very rich and vibrant vibe to the issue.
The main cover for Star Wars (2020) #29 comes from the always amazing E.M. Gist which features the cast of Lando, Leia, and Luke all dressed up for a costume party and auction, with Chewie standing guard. John Tyler Christopher returns for the first variant cover with his Action Figure variant of Queen Amidala in her Naboo gown which fits quite well with the galant party seen within the issue. The second variant cover is the Revelations cover and is a stunning piece by Taurin Clarke that features the characters within the issue, but in the form of an epic piece that feels like a poster for Return of the Jedi!
Take a ride with Luke, Leia, Holdo, Lando, and Chewie as they explore the rich and relaxed world of the Galaxy’s elite. Fire up your X-wing fighters and blast off to your local comic shop to pick up an issue today!
