Lourna Dee of the Nihil has used the Great Leveler on the Jedi Terec and Keeve! Somehow Keeve has survived, but Terec and his bond-twin Ceret have not fared as well. Though Avar Kriss and Sskeer have come to the rescue, Lourna Dee attempts an escape from the area. Kriss grabs on to her ship with all the power of the Force, begging for help from Keeve and Sskeer, but with neither of them able to offer any assistance Lourna slips through the clutches of her grasp. Avar is furious and becoming reckless, something the Jedi Council have noticed as they ask Keeve to keep an eye on Kriss during an upcoming mission. On top of everything else, Avar also temporarily releases Sskeer from the Jedi Order after his vicious and violent assault on the Nihil until the Council can discuss what to do with him.

Write Cavan Scott brings the second part of this very dark and troubling new arc with The High Republic #12. Though a less happy issue, the story does have its moments of hope and happiness near the end. It’s clear Scott is setting up for something bigger, and unfortunately darker, to come with a lot of character beats throughout this issue that lead toward thoughts and interactions between the three main Jedi here that are not exactly thoughts that Jedi should be embracing. Along with Scott’s great writing we have artist Georges Jeanty, colorist Carlos Lopez, inker Karl Story, and letterer VC’s Ariana Maher who have created another stunning issue together. The standout here is definitely the emotions boiling up from within every major character that are expertly visualized throughout many panels.

The main cover of The High Republic #12 comes from artist Phil Noto who gives us a menacing depiction of a masked Lourna Dee holding a green lightsaber. The first of two variant covers is from Mike McKone and GURU-eFX and features an intense battle between the shining light Avar Kriss and the dark Nihil warrior Lourna Dee. The second variant cover is a stunning piece from Caspar Wijngaard depicting Kriss trying her best to hold onto Lourna Dee’s ship with an explosion of beautiful and vibrant colors littering the page.

The High Republic #12 continues this new dark and emotional story arc from Cavan Scott and features stunning art as to be expected from the teams that work on this book. It’s another must read issue from the newest exciting era of Star Wars! So fire up your Jedi Vector and fly down to your local comic shop to get a copy today!
