The High Republic (2022) #2 - Comic Review
Two Jedi are hot on a murderer's trail in The High Republic (2022) #2!
Lucas Wagner
November 9, 2022 @ 9:00amHaving seemingly just died, Jedi Knight Vildar Mac comes back to life in The High Republic (2022) #2. Disregarding the worry of Padawan Matthea Cathley, Vildar continues his chase after the mysterious dark sider who seemingly killed Vildar, and another innocent, just moments ago. Using the Force, Vildar summons a vision that helps lead him to where he needs to go in order to track down his attacker. Unfortunately for him, the Jedi knows nothing about this planet he just arrived on. Thankfully, the always excited Matty is very familiar with the inner workings of Jedha City!
Writer Cavan Scott does not take a moment to pump the breaks with Vildar’s apparent death as he moves the story at a breakneck speed with The High Republic (2022) #22. Scott delivers fun, fast, and exciting storytelling that feels like an exciting crime chase straight out of a Guy Ritchie film with tons of humor to boot. This issue also delves fully into the galaxy, and especially Jedha, in a way that feels like you’re living in a Dungeons & Dragons game, albeit Star Wars themed, with various factions and locales and even a fun bar with wild creatures running it!
The artistic team behind The High Republic (2022) #2 has artist Ario Anindito, inker Mark Morales, colorist Frank William, and letterer VC’s Ariana Maher returning to craft another absolutely stunning work of art. While everyone is once again on their A-game, it’s the colors from William that blew my mind, with Vildar’s vision being a huge standout.
The main cover art for The High Republic (2022) #2 is from interior artist Ario Anindito and finds the three major characters Vildar, Matty, and Tey Sirrek front and center in a gorgeous piece of art. Rod Reis brings us the first of two variant covers and focuses solely on Vildar, lightsaber out, and is full of breathtaking colors and phenomenal work on the Jedi’s face and expression. The second variant cover is by Rachael Stott and shows off the story’s other Jedi with Padawan Matty looking cool as all heck with a fun lightsaber move. Stott’s cover is definitely my favorite of the three.
If you weren’t already sold on this series with the first issue, The High Republic (2022) #2 will make sure you love it as it grabs you tight and drags you into its epic and gorgeous story! Make sure to run down to your local shop to pick up your own copy today!
