The High Republic (2022) #3 - Comic Review

The High Republic (2022) #3 delves into the life and past of Tey Sirrek as our crew explore the Temple of the Guardians of the Whills!

With the current investigation leading the trio of Jedi Vildar Mac and Matty Cathley as well as Tey Sirrek to the great Temple of the Guardians of the Whills, The High Republic (2022) #3 finds the group not very welcome by Captain Oklane Viss. While at first Vildar believes the Guardians to be out to attack all three of them, Viss quickly reveals that they have very specific issues with the rogue Sirrek himself. After Sirrek storms off, it’s revealed that he and the Guardians have a much deeper connection that goes way back … to the time when Tey himself was a Guardian!

Cavan Scott takes time this issue to slow the overall plot progression of this series down a notch and lets The High Republic (2022) #3 focus on building out the character of Tey, as well as how various factions work in Jedha City, during this early High Republic era. He focuses a lot on building up the rules and morals of this quick witted rogue and how he became the person he is today. This issue is still full of action, and at times despair, but Scott’s strength this time is the meditative character study which he, as always, pulls off wonderfully.

The visual artistic team behind The High Republic (2022) #3 consists of artist Ario Anindito, inker Mark Morales, colorist Frank William, and letterer VC’s Ariana Maher. All of these people do a spectacular job, but it’s William’s colors that make the art so special. The colors are so vibrant and full of wonder that it really makes us feel like we’re in the middle of a whole other world.

The fantastic interior artist Ario Anindito also did the main cover for The High Republic (2022) #3 which sees Tey Sirrek attempting to save a young kid from a menacing attacker. The colors for this cover are absolutely breathtaking! The first variant cover comes from Ema Lupacchino and David Curiel and is a very heroic closeup of Matty with her lightsaber activated. Marc Laming and Lee Loughridge bring us the second variant, this one showing off a gorgeous depiction of our main trio of Vildar, Matty, and Tey!

The High Republic (2022) #3 takes us to the next chapter of this thrilling story as we find out more about Tey Sirrek’s past, specifically with the Guardians of the Whills, as well as how the various groups within Jedha City deal and interact with each other. Another must read issue, so fire up those swoop bikes and zoom down to your local shop to pick up your copy today!
