The High Republic Adventures #12 - Comic Review

Can love really conquer all? In The High Republic Adventures #12, this question is asked as the battle between Jedi and Nihil reaches a fever pitch.

The High Republic Adventures #12, titled Let Go, charges towards an epic Jedi versus Nihil showdown with best friends Lula and Zeen front and center. The two girls share an incredibly strong bond that has formed over the span of the events of this title. For Lula, having a strong attachment is at odds with all she’s been taught in her Jedi training; how can she feel love but still be strong in the Force? Is that even possible?

The girls’ plan is to go their separate ways, Lula joining Master Buckets of Blood in the hunt for Krix, and Zeen heading to Corellia to explore what Nihil activity is going on there. However, it’s all hands on deck as Sabata Krill’s plan to backstab Krix is set in motion. The location of Krix’s Nihil base on the planet Dol’Har is discovered, so our padawan pals team up once more and go on the offensive. Laser and cannon fire erupt as the showdown commences with all sights set on capturing Krix.

Daniel José Older focuses on the theme of love more strongly than ever in issue #12. The bonds of friendship that have formed within the Jedi ranks are awesome to see and one of the reasons why this title has become one of my favorite The High Republic works. Seeing how Lula and Zeen both come to understand their love for each other and how to harness that for the good of the galaxy is a beautiful thing. Older deserves all the praise for showing how love truly can conquer all when it’s used as a tool instead of a weapon. Will the love the Jedi have nurtured be strong enough to convert Krix back to the light side? My prediction is yes and I fully expect a heart melting finale hug (on a splash page preferably).

Once again artists Harvey Tolibao, Pow Rodrix and Rebecca Nalty’s work is amazing to look at. They blend the heart and action so well—they are amazingly skilled visual storytellers. Special kudos to Megan Huang for her alternate cover artwork as well, always a treat having her work on display.

Next month’s The High Republic Adventures #13 wraps up this storyline. Let’s hope this title survives the publisher switch from IDW to Dark Horse. Regardless, I’m sure this will not be the last time we see Zeen, Lula, Qort, Farzala and all the other characters we’ve come to love.
