The High Republic Adventures: Galactic Bake-Off Spectacular - Comic Review

The lessons taught by the Jedi Masters onboard Starlight Beacon have extended to the kitchen in IDW’s one shot comic story The High Republic Adventures: Galactic Bake-Off Spectacular. On the menu are Master Yoda’s Special Baked Sweet Story Custard Cakes which require an accompanying story of cooperation for them to come out perfectly. Masters Kantam Sy and Buckets of Blood have the perfect story to accompany the bake, a time during the Great Disaster when they worked together to save denizens of the galaxy.

Writers Daniel José Older and Vita Ayala, obviously inspired by their love for baked goods (and The Great British Bake-Off?) serve up a story chock full of laughs and lessons. Set in a time before the events of The Fallen Star, it’s a nice look at when all was well on Starlight Beacon, simpler times if you will. Older and Ayala show how good food can really bring people together, as the kitchen gets more and more full as the story unfolds. It’s a treat for readers to see characters from across multiple The High Republic initiatives, a sort of Where’s Waldo for Star Wars fans.

The artists for this one shot are Jo Geyoung and Toni Bruno, the former handling the bake-off storyline and the latter handling the events taking place during the Great Disaster. Geyoung has a manga style that fits really well with the lighthearted vibe of the story. Bruno’s art, as always, is stellar as he portrays the fear, courage and collaboration that took place. I particularly loved his take on the new character, Master Griswal, an elderly Jedi in need of Kantam’s help; she’s small but mighty with visual references that harken to Yoda and Grogu, large ears and eyes that allow for strong expressions.

As an extra special bonus, the recipe for the dessert (written by none other than Claudia Gray herself) is also included, so people here on Earth can take part in the Galactic Bake-Off.
